How to Make Your Next Best Hire

Who are you describing when you write an ad searching for your next great hire?

Your company?

The job?

Shockingly, neither of those will attract the kind of person you seek.

The only way to do that is to appeal to the candidate on an emotional level by describing the kinds of things your ideal employee would get excited about and see themselves doing. The more they picture in their mind those things, the more they are convinced they are your perfect candidate and will bust down the door to get the job.

Show; don’t tell.

You could say, “We seek someone who shows initiative.”

Or you could say,

“The last person who had this job, had to deliver the mail to a post office box and a package to a courier. You know what happened don’t you? He mistakenly dropped the courier package into the Post Office box and couldn’t get it out. So he waited and waited and waited. We thought he had gotten lost. But he waited until the mail person arrived to collect the mail from that box. And even though it was completely against regulations, he somehow convinced that Post office employee to give him that courier package back. Then he delivered it to the courier on time. Some people would have fired him, but we love and reward initiative, so we promoted him. That’s why his job is available.”

What will your next employment ad say? Will it be an ad about you, your company or the job you want to fill?

Or will it show the true essence of the person you want to hire?
